Attended Prof Laurence Anthony’s presentation this morning on this exciting topic. This session was part of this year’s edition of Corpus Linguistics & Applied Linguistics research online event

Under the motto that better understanding of AI applications will help us in the current utopian vs. dystopian discussion to select pathways to employ the technologies involved for positive developments in education he first supported the audience’s deeper understanding of the related key concepts Chatbots (tools) and LLMs (models) in relation to integrating AI technology with ‘traditional’ corpus methods in language teaching and learning.
He then presented a live demo of ‘ChatAI’, the ChatAI tool he developed within his AntConc corpus analysis toolkit to simplify both the management and use of large language models (LLMs) in classroom settings.

And he pointed out that the tool has features that not only contribute to a smooth and intuitive lesson flow, but also improve the authenticity and replicability of results, while at the same time greatly reducing the possibility of LLM hallucinations.
For more information he referred to his recently published papers (on a slide which I did not capture) but will soon update what Co-Pilot helped me to trace so far:
The most recent publications/presentations by Laurence Anthony (Anthony Lawrence) on AI and corpus use are:
- Plenary Talk – Understanding Language in the Age of AI
- Delivered at the 13th International Corpus Linguistics Conference (Birmingham, UK, June–July 2025).
- Explores how Large Language Models (LLMs) such as DeepSeek-R1 align with human language processing models, and introduces a new platform for corpus linguists to engage with cutting-edge AI YouTube.
- Invited Lecture – Symbiosis of Generative AI and Corpus Linguistics: An Integrated Approach
- Presented at the University of Murcia (November 2025). <this is the talk!>
- Examines strengths and weaknesses of LLMs vs. traditional corpus methods, and introduces a hybrid platform combining cloud-based AI (OpenAI models) with local/private LLMs for sensitive educational data Universidad de Murcia.
- Article/Presentation – Integrating AI Technology into Corpus-Based Language Learning through ChatAI
- Published in Computer Assisted Language Learning (2025).
- Details the integration of AntConc’s corpus tools with a new ChatAI module, enabling learners to pipe authentic corpus data into LLMs for vocabulary learning, grammar exploration, discourse analysis, and second-language writing support
- Anthony, L. (2025). Integrating AI technology into corpus-based language learning through ChatAI . Computer Assisted Language Learning, 1–19. https://doi.org/10.1080/09588221.2025.2589747
- They collectively show his pivot toward hybrid AI–corpus platforms, emphasizing:
- Pedagogical scaffolding: AI reduces cognitive load in data-driven learning.
- Authenticity & replicability: Corpus data grounds AI outputs, mitigating hallucinations.
Ethical integration: Local/private LLMs protect sensitive educational data
At TELLConsult we will further explore the available new tool and integrated approaches and include resulting CPD materials in our ErasmusPlus courses related to AI-powered and data-driven language learning.
